Since ancient times,so many great artists and talented painters have so vividly depicted the beauties of Mother Nature and human lief in times of peace or war and despite whatever changes that may have taken place.
Lotus, for instance,is something that a great many artists have constantly tried to paint because of its charming shape, bright color, impicit connotation and delicate beauty.
This is a lotus painting. It’s said that the artists, when working on it,accidentally overtured a cup of tea on the paper. The tea water seeping through and flowing on the paper .enlightened him.As a result,he finished the painting by the splash-ink technique.HuangMiaoZi,the famous traditional Chinese painting critic, inscibed on the painting: “Delicate Fragrance that Spreads Afar”.
The painting is the work of a Hong Kong young painter named Xu Jian who styled himself Han-bin.Mr.Xu Jian was born in beijing in 1955 although his ancestral home was in the city Wu Xi.That is why he maintains the elegance and refinement of a typical Southern scholar.Xu Jian’s early works refleacted the arduous effort that he had devoted to artistic studies. But his research on the traditional painting style dose not prevent him from making new progress. On the basis of what he learns from ancient artists and their works,XuJian tries hard to develop his own style and has gradually become a young artist of continuing new ideas.
“The young lotus blooms had no sooner taken shape than dragonflies set their feet on them.”
The painting begins with young lotus blooms. They look so fresh and lovely. They stand upright, full of life, announcing their proud birth, and welcoming the first rays of the morning sun.
“Endless green leaves are greener than ever, while lotus blooms are reddened by bright sunshine.”
Lotus blooms in this part of the painting are in the prime of their life.Mature and beautiful, they are telling the world they have become attractive young grils waitin to be loved.
“Withering leaves look yellow with dying stalks resisting the wind.”
These dying lotus blooms painted by XuJian suggest on remorse, but hope for a new life.
Some say Hong Kong is the Paris in the Orient. In this dazzing commercialized world,XuJian cares about nothing but his artisticstudies. He carries on China’s srtistic tradition and maintains the classic beauty, soomth style, and elegant standards of traditional Chinese paintings. As an artist himself,XuJian travels frequently between HongKong and the mainland, calling on noted artists for instruction ande sponsoring his own paintings exhibitions in HongKong in an effort to promote the fine tradition of Chinese paintings.XuJian’s efforts have won wide coverage by the HongKong press.
XuJian has been fascinated by traditional Chinese paintings since his childhood.Later,as a student of the great master of Chinses painting,Mr.DongShouping,he made marked progress in painting skills and structural designs and gradually developed his own simple, realstic, delicate and elegant style.
“Three In One”is an excellent work by XuJian. The composition of the painting is so bold and unconstrained it looks like a poem by the well-known Tang Dynasty poet Li Bai written after he got drunk.Leaving one third of diferent looks at the top accompanied by tall green bamoos and snow-covered plum blossoms. The whole painting looks well-blance despite his unusual composition.
This is the last photograph of the late great master of traditional Cinese painting Wang Xuetao taken shortly before his death.Deeply touched by his last student who was only sixteen at the time.XuJian was also a sudent of Wang Senran,a specialist in Chinese culture and history, calligrapher and painter. In 1988 when Wang Xuetao was terminally ill,XuJian remained at his bedside to say the final goodbey. Now whenever XuJian retures to the mainland from HongKong,he would go to see his mentor’s widow. His respect for his mentor persists and he has lived up to his mentor’s expectations.
The “Ode to the Crane”was painted by XuJian in cooperation with Zhao Shaoang,a great master of the Lingnan school of painting. The sense of artistic perfection is delicate. It comes from artistic attainment, hard work and inspiration.
“The spindrift in the river is red as fire at sunrise, and the green water becomes greener when spring comes.”
This “Waves Leaping Skyward”reflects Xu Jian’s impression of the sunrise. His bold and unrestrained use of color ans simple yet vivid composition together with a hazy background enable rosy clouds, ripping water, the rising sun,and flying cranes to become a harmonious whole, creating an ob scure atmosphere of a beautiful spring.
A review of Xu Jian’s large quantity of artistic works reveals his ardent pursuit of such themes as harmony, peace, teanquility, implicit moralmeaning, happiness and perfection. He pursues similar goals in real life.To be“natural and simple, resolute and honest, unbending and self-reliant and to seck delicate fragrance that spreads afar” is exactly his motto for both life and art.
Kindness and honesty are qulities that one tries to muryure from thr early childhood. It is with kindness and honesty that Mr.Xu Jian treats life and his beloved art of painting.
